Ahem, what exactly are AHAs? Or BHAs? And why do they sound like something you were supposed to learn about in 9th grade chemistry class? Don’t panic babe, I’m here to break it all down for you.

AHAs and BHAs are both chemical exfoliants that brighten and clear your skin. While a scrub physically exfoliates, AHAs and BHAs exfoliate by breaking up the bonds that hold your skin cells together. They’re the active ingredients that are doing the most, #letsbefrank.

Now put on your lab coat. Or your bathrobe. Or nothing at all. Let’s talk science.

What are AHAs?

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs for short) come from sugarcane and other sugary fruits. They’re water soluble, which means they stay put on your skin’s surface. AHAs are everywhere these days — most skincare junkies have stocked their bathroom shelves with at least one lactic acid or glycolic acid product. Feeling the FOMO? My vitamin C face mask and AHA body lotion are packed with both.

The benefits of AHAs.

Aha! The secret to a glowing complexion. Incorporating AHAs into your routine is a smart move. If you’re in the market for smoother skin, that is. While they may not be able to go deep into your pores, they gently slough away the dead skin that can leave you looking dull. Babes with fine lines, hyperpigmentation, scars, and uneven skin tone will like lactic and glycolic acids the most.

What are BHAs?

Surprise, surprise: BHAs are also known as beta hydroxy acids. These actives are derived from bark and leaves, and are oil soluble — meaning they’re best suited for babes with oily or combination skin. Compared with AHAs, BHAs exfoliate at a deeper level to remove dead skin cells and excess sebum. The most common BHA? Salicylic acid, AKA acne’s worst nightmare.

Want in on the breakout-busting action? My Extra Clean Face Wash goes deep beneath the surface to clear out the gunk (read: oil, bacteria, and other impurities) from your pores. The result? Less redness, inflammation, and blemishes.

Ready to get active?

These gentle acids are the ultimate overachievers. They go above and beyond while you sit back and relax (or even sleep). AHAs and BHAs unclog your pores, exfoliate dead skin cells, help fade fine lines, and reduce redness and dark spots. What can’t they do?

But before you get started, just remember these things: exfoliate only a few times a week, and wear your SPF.

Now get off the treadmill, babe, and get active with me instead. Wink.
