#letsbefrank, babes love bad food just as much as you love bad boys.

But just like those shitty men, bad food can make you feel like crap afterwards.

There’s a connection between what you shove in your mouth and how you feel afterwards.

To tell you all about I called on Whitney & Danielle from Sakara Life:

“The food you eat literally builds your body from the inside out. And it’s not just about your weight or body composition. Every bite you take has the power to change your genetic expression and your future wellness. We love this quote from Dr. Mark Hyman (NYT bestselling author and Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine): “Food contains information. Every bite of food you eat broadcasts a set of coded instructions to your body—instructions that can create either health or disease.”

What are some foods babes need to watch out for?

In general, try to eat as close to the source as possible—it’s eating the way nature intended! That means plant foods in their most unprocessed, natural form. We also strongly advise eating organic produce as often as possible, to avoid toxic pesticides and known endocrine disruptors. It’s kinder to your body and to Mother Earth.

What are some foods that help your skin go all glowy?

Eat foods that support a healthy microbiome, which refers to the trillions of bacteria living on and in your body (particularly in the gut). These microbes control everything from your digestion and immunity to your hormones and your complexion. A healthy gut microbiome is diverse and balanced with the right strains of beneficial bacteria. You cultivate this “inner garden” by eating a clean diet with lots of plant foods (especially leafy greens!) and natural probiotics (i.e. fermented foods) and by taking a high-quality probiotic supplement, like Sakara’s Daily Probiotic Blend.

Eating clean encourages gut health by providing your microbes with the nourishment they need to thrive, while starving the pathogenic bacteria (like candida) that feed on processed junk and sugar, resulting in (among other things) clear, bright, youthful skin!

Also, one of our Pillars of Nutrition (around which all of our meals and products are based) is “Eat Your Water.” This means eating fresh plant foods with a high water content (think melons, cucumber, tomatoes, berries, zucchini…) to flood your body with long-lasting hydration that helps flush out toxins and plumps up your cells for a healthy, youthful glow.

Do you have a favourite recipe for skin health?

It’s a product, not a recipe, but our new Beauty Chocolates are made with raw dark cacao, coconut sugar and a patented blend of 100% gluten-free phytoceramides, which are natural lipids derived from wheat. Phytoceramides are clinically proven to improve skin’s texture, boost collagen and minimize fine lines and wrinkles in two weeks with daily use! They work by replenishing key lipids in the cell barrier to seal in essential moisture. Beauty Chocolates are definitely the most delicious part of our nightly beauty routine.

What about energy: what foods would you recommend?

Eating your water again! Ultra hydration is one of the keys to feeling energized. Dehydration can cause lethargy, headaches and a lack of focus. Also, look for clean sources of plant protein and healthy fats for sustained energy. We love nutrient-dense superfoods like chia, flax and hemp seeds!

Sometimes my babes are stressed out, what foods should they avoid? What should they dig into?

It helps to first understand the effect stress is having on your body. When you’re stressed out, your levels of the hormone cortisol are elevated. High cortisol can cause adrenal fatigue, leading to weight gain and difficulty losing weight, mood swings, brain fog and fatigue. Adaptogens are herbs and botanicals that have naturally stress-relieving properties—they ease adrenal fatigue by improving your body’s response to stress. Some of our favourites are ashwagandha, holy basil, ginseng, rhodiola and cordyceps.

Also, look for foods that contain B vitamins (like seeds, beans and avocado), which encourage an optimal stress response, and healthy fats from foods like avocado, coconut and high-quality, cold-pressed oils, which are good for brain and adrenal health. Magnesium is another nutrient that helps relieve stress—you can take a high-quality supplement or find it in foods like nuts and dark leafy greens.

My babes are on a 30 day challenge to go natural, what should they be eating?

Load up on leafy greens (aim for 4–6 cups a day!), cut out the processed, packaged and artificial ingredients and foods and consider adding a probiotic supplement to your daily routine, which will help you maintain a healthy gut microbiome.

Once the 30 days are over, how should my babes continue clean eating? What happens if they down a bottle of red wine? Have they ruined everything?

Definitely not! Clean eating—and living the Sakara Life—isn’t a diet, it’s a lifestyle. That means there’s no wagon to fall off of. We eat our greens and our superfoods every day so that we can enjoy indulgences like French fries and wine on the weekend without feeling guilty about it. Wellness is about balance!”

Kind of like hooking up with your ex, then going for a massage. It all comes down to balance, beb.

x frank.
